Getting all decked out this summer
By Claudelle Boudreau
In recent years, with more and more homeowners creating relaxing retreats in their very own backyards, decks have become a key factor in creating the stage for what has become known as the ‘outdoor room’.
From multiple levels to custom designs boasting special shapes, sizes and seating capacities to luxurious additions such as firepits, hot tubs or waterfalls, the possibilities are endless.
If you’re thinking of getting all decked out this summer, consider these tips:
LEVELS
When designing your deck, start by looking at the physical space you have to work with. Opting for multiple levels may provide you with practical solutions for maximizing space while adding visual interest to your landscape.
A large, main deck might serve well as a living and dining space, while a smaller, lower level addition can serve as a kitchen area, and yet another level might host a hot tub.
Another thing that a multi-level deck can provide is additional seating, which is something that many of today’s homeowners are looking for. Ideally, you will want to be able to accommodate at least eight people comfortably.
DESIGNS
Once you have an idea of the design your deck will take, consider what materials you’ll use. Pressure treated wood is one of the most popular choices as it offers a natural appearance, is resistant to termites and is usually among the most economical. Even when redwood or composite decking is used for the deck platform, preserved wood is usually used for posts, beams, and joists because of its structural strength and ability to withstand deterioration in ground contact.
Built in planters and privacy screens are other elements that can easily be incorporated into your design.
RAILINGS
Don’t forget to consider what you’ll do for the railing. Not only a safety feature, railings are an important and attention-getting part of a deck. You can add a distinctive look to your new deck or remodel an existing deck with pressure treated deck accessories. Turned posts and spindles, balusters and handrails are available in a variety of styles and are easy to install.
MAINTENANCE
Every decking material requires some maintenance, for cleaning if nothing else. Pressure-treatment provides long-term protection, but even treated wood is subject to moisture damage. To protect your wood against weather and premature aging, coat it with an effective brand of water repellent as soon as possible and then reapply a coating every year or so.
If you are in the market for a deck or are looking to upgrade your existing structure and you have some ideas but aren’t really sure where to start, call a professional! Ask friends and family members for names of contractors that they’ve dealt with or do a quick search in the telephone directory, or online. City permits may be required for the work you’re doing depending on area bylaws etc., A qualified expert may help alleviate extra worry and help make your dreams a reality.
